The studio was founded in 2007 as a doctoral research project at the University of Portsmouth and has released multiple award-winning titles since 2012, including Dear Esther, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, Little Orpheus, Still Wakes the Deep, and Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2. The Chinese Room became independent in 2025 following a management buyout and is currently working on multiple projects. The studio has won six BAFTA awards, Apple Design Awards, DICE Awards, and other prestigious gaming accolades.
